Group Therapy
Connection That Heals – Growth You Can’t Get Alone
There is something uniquely powerful about being in a room with people who understand what you’re going through – not because they’ve read about it, but because they’re living it too. Group therapy offers something that individual therapy, no matter how effective, simply can’t replicate: the experience of being truly seen, supported, and challenged by others who share similar struggles.
At Behavioral Medical Center in Troy, MI, our group therapy programs provide a safe, professionally facilitated environment where individuals can process difficult emotions, practice new skills, and build meaningful connections – all under the guidance of a licensed therapist trained in group dynamics and evidence-based treatment.
Who Benefits from Group Therapy
Group therapy is not a lesser alternative to individual treatment – it is a distinct and clinically proven form of care. We work with individuals facing a wide range of challenges, including:
- Depression, anxiety, and mood-related concerns
- Substance use and addiction recovery
- Grief and loss
- Trauma and PTSD
- Anger management and emotional regulation
- Social isolation and difficulty forming relationships
- Low self-esteem and negative self-image
- Co-dependency and unhealthy relationship patterns
- Life transitions – divorce, job loss, retirement, major health changes
- Chronic stress and burnout
- Interpersonal conflict and communication difficulties
You don’t need to be in active crisis to benefit from group therapy. Many individuals join a group to supplement their individual treatment, develop stronger social skills, or simply gain perspective from others navigating similar life challenges.
Our Approach
Group therapy at BMC Troy is structured, intentional, and guided by trained clinicians who understand how to create a space that feels both safe and productive. Our therapists set clear expectations, facilitate meaningful dialogue, and ensure that every member has the opportunity to participate at their own pace.
Sessions typically focus on:
- Building interpersonal awareness – Understanding how you relate to others and how those patterns show up in your daily life
- Developing coping strategies – Learning and practicing real-world skills for managing stress, emotion, and difficult situations
- Giving and receiving feedback – Gaining honest, compassionate input from peers in a way that fosters growth rather than defensiveness
- Reducing isolation – Discovering that your experiences are not as uncommon or shameful as they may feel in silence
- Creating accountability – Establishing goals and following through with the support of a group that is invested in your progress
Our therapists draw on a range of evidence-based frameworks including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, psychodynamic group principles, and interpersonal process techniques – always adapted to the needs and goals of the specific group.
What to Expect in a Group Setting
It’s natural to feel nervous about sharing personal experiences with strangers. Most people do. But the structure of a therapy group is very different from a casual conversation – there are clear ground rules around respect, confidentiality, and boundaries that every member agrees to uphold. You will never be pressured to share more than you’re comfortable with, and your therapist is there to guide the process and keep the environment safe for everyone.
Groups are typically small – usually between five and ten members – and may be open (ongoing with members joining over time) or closed (a set group that begins and ends together). Your therapist will help determine which format and group focus is the best fit for you.
A Note on Confidentiality
Confidentiality is foundational to group therapy. Our therapists adhere strictly to HIPAA privacy standards, and all group members are required to agree to confidentiality guidelines as a condition of participation. What is shared in group stays in group.
Both in-person and telehealth group sessions are available depending on the program.
Joining a group can feel like a big step – but it’s one that often leads to breakthroughs that surprise people. Call us at (248) 528-9000, Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm, to schedule a confidential assessment and find out which group may be right for you.
