Psychodynamic Therapy

Understanding the Why Behind the What

Most people who seek therapy know something isn’t working. They can describe the anxiety, the relationship patterns, the self-sabotage, the persistent sadness – but they can’t always explain why it keeps happening. Psychodynamic therapy is built around that question. Rather than focusing solely on symptom management, it goes deeper – exploring the unconscious patterns, unresolved experiences, and emotional undercurrents that shape how you think, feel, and relate to others.

At Behavioral Medical Center in Troy, MI, our psychodynamic therapy services offer individuals a space to explore the root causes of their struggles – not just the surface-level symptoms – with a licensed therapist trained in helping people develop lasting self-awareness and meaningful, durable change.

What Psychodynamic Therapy Addresses

Psychodynamic therapy is one of the most well-established and researched forms of psychotherapy. It is effective across a broad range of emotional and psychological concerns, including:

  • Depression that persists despite changes in circumstances
  • Anxiety that feels disproportionate to current stressors
  • Repeated relationship difficulties and unhealthy attachment patterns
  • Unresolved grief, loss, or childhood trauma
  • Chronic feelings of emptiness, shame, or low self-worth
  • Self-defeating behaviors and patterns of self-sabotage
  • Difficulty identifying, expressing, or tolerating emotions
  • Personality-related concerns and long-standing interpersonal struggles
  • Identity confusion and a persistent sense of feeling “stuck”
  • Emotional reactions that feel overwhelming or hard to explain
  • Co-occurring mental health conditions that haven’t responded fully to other approaches

You don’t need a specific diagnosis to benefit from psychodynamic therapy. Many individuals pursue this form of treatment because they want more than coping strategies – they want to understand themselves on a deeper level and change the patterns that keep showing up across different areas of their lives.

Our Approach

Psychodynamic therapy at BMC Troy is insight-oriented, relationally grounded, and tailored to each individual’s history and emotional landscape. Our therapists create a nonjudgmental space where you are encouraged to speak openly – about your past, your present, your relationships, and even your experience in the therapy room itself.

Sessions typically focus on:

  • Exploring unconscious patterns – Identifying the beliefs, defenses, and emotional habits that operate outside of your awareness but drive much of your behavior
  • Understanding the influence of early experiences – Examining how formative relationships and childhood dynamics continue to shape your emotional responses and relational style
  • Working through unresolved conflict – Processing painful memories, suppressed emotions, and unfinished psychological business that still carries weight
  • Strengthening self-awareness – Developing the ability to observe your own internal world with honesty and curiosity rather than avoidance
  • Using the therapeutic relationship as a tool – Paying attention to the dynamics between you and your therapist as a window into how you relate to others in your life

Our therapists integrate classical psychodynamic principles with contemporary relational and attachment-based perspectives – creating an approach that is both clinically rigorous and deeply personal.

How It Differs from Other Forms of Therapy

Where many therapeutic approaches focus on changing specific thoughts or behaviors in the present, psychodynamic therapy is more concerned with understanding why those thoughts and behaviors exist in the first place. It tends to be deeper in scope, more exploratory in nature, and more focused on emotional insight than on structured exercises or homework. That said, it is not without direction – your therapist will actively guide the process and help you connect what you discover about yourself to real, observable changes in your daily life.

Psychodynamic therapy can be effective as a standalone treatment or as a complement to other modalities such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy or medication management. Your therapist will work with you to determine the approach that best fits your needs and goals.
