Psychiatric Evaluations
Understanding You Before Treating You
A psychiatric evaluation is the foundation of good mental health care. Before any treatment plan can be developed – whether that involves therapy, medication, or both – your provider needs a clear and complete picture of who you are, what you’re experiencing, and what may be driving your symptoms. At the Behavioral Medical Center – Troy in Michigan, our psychiatric evaluations are thorough, unhurried, and conducted in a warm, nonjudgmental environment where you can speak openly and honestly.
Whether you’re seeking help for the first time or transitioning from another provider, a comprehensive evaluation ensures that your care at BMC-Troy starts on the right foot.
What a Psychiatric Evaluation Covers
Our evaluations are conducted by experienced psychiatric providers and typically include a review of:
- Current symptoms and concerns
- Personal and family psychiatric history
- Medical history and current medications
- Substance use history
- Developmental and social history
- Life circumstances, stressors, and support systems
For children and adolescents, we also gather input from parents or guardians and, when appropriate, coordinate with schools or pediatricians to build the most accurate picture possible.
What Happens After
At the conclusion of your evaluation, your provider will share their findings with you, discuss any diagnoses, and collaborate with you on a personalized treatment plan. This may include individual therapy, medication management, referrals to specialized services, or a combination of approaches – all tailored to your specific needs and goals.
A psychiatric evaluation is not something to fear. It is simply a conversation – a careful, structured one – designed to help your provider understand you as a whole person, not just a set of symptoms.
Who Should Consider a Psychiatric Evaluation
You may benefit from a psychiatric evaluation if you are:
- Experiencing persistent sadness, anxiety, mood swings, or behavioral changes
- Struggling to focus and concentrate, feeling fidgety or impulsive
- Struggling to function at work, school, or in relationships
- Concerned about a child’s emotional or behavioral development
- Seeking a second opinion on an existing diagnosis
- Starting mental health treatment for the first time
